<br />
It's been a while since I've last uploaded anything, sorry about that! But this time I have a super cute tutorial (filled with pictures!) I hope you will all enjoy. <a href="http://activaproducts.com/" target="_blank">Activa Products</a> kindly sent over some Hearty air dry clay to try out, here's what I came up with.<br />
<br />
I'm a huge fan of using multiple mediums to get the desired effect and was super excited and eager to try out how Hearty air dry clay worked. When mixed with a little bit of water, you can make a paste and pipe it out. It was a little tricky at first to get a "perfect" swirl look so I suggest doing a couple practice swirls first.<br />
<br />
Have fun and enjoy this tutorial! Feel free to share your creations with me :)<br />

Peanut butter jelly time! Sorry I've been gone for so long. Lately I've felt very tired and uninspired to make any miniatures. In fact, I'm too tired to write any more on this post so I'll leave it short and sweet. There's a video tutorial for these miniature pb&j sandwiches below; follow along and share you creations with me :D<br />

Have you ever noticed those little carts around the Disney parks that sell ice cream & frozen treats?They usually have a display with the fake ice creams on it too. I decided it would be really fun to recreate those treats! My personal favorite is the Mickey Mouse ice cream sandwich, but I won't deny any ice cream, it's all delicious!<img height="20" src="https://twemoji.maxcdn.com/36x36/1f366.png" width="20" /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Stick around to the end of the post, I made another video tutorial for you! It's a long one, but I think it's worth it <img height="20" src="https://twemoji.maxcdn.com/36x36/1f61d.png" style="text-align: center;" width="20" /></div>

<br />
It's Disneyland's 60th anniversary! For their diamond celebration, Disneyland rolled out a bunch of new diamond celebration themed treats. The Mickey & Minnie candy apples were already adorable, but somehow they became even cuter! I attempted to recreated them in 1/12th scale; you can even follow along in the video tutorial below:<br />
<div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: right;">

<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/themicrobakery/19576694748/in/dateposted-public/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Disneyland 60th Anniversary Candy Apples"><img alt="Disneyland 60th Anniversary Candy Apples" height="424" src="https://farm1.staticflickr.com/302/19576694748_3b402dc69a_o.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script>
From the work in progress shot, you can see I intended on making quite a few Mickey & Minnie candy apples. The original 12 candy apples were ruined when I was experimenting with the sugar coating. The first attempt, I tried mixing blue chalk with the sand and then sealing it...that turned into a hot mess! It started turning splotchy and lumpy :( Splotchy I don't mind since you can add several layers to make it opaque, but the lumpiness was driving me insane. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So on the second attempt, I painted the bottom half of the apple in blue acrylic, dipped it in sand, and then sealed it. This turned out a lot better. I feel like remaking these again with a more vivid blue, though. Yeesh, never satisfied am I? <img height="20" src="https://twemoji.maxcdn.com/36x36/1f61d.png" width="20" /></div>

<br />
Can you believe it, it's been a a full year since I started TheMicrobakery! It's been quite a journey with a reasonable learning curve (knowledge is never a bad thing!). I was always interested in the different aspects of blogging, photography, editing, and miniature making; all I had to do was throw it all together. Although in the beginning I was hesitant to share my creations, the feedback has been absolutely astounding in the best way.<br />
<br />
With that said, I want to thank all my viewers. Thank you for all the comments, likes, shares, and subscriptions/follows. I also must add, a <b>huge</b> thank you to everybody who has been patient when I don't upload anything for days (possibly even weeks, oops!) at a time. Sometimes real life catches up and it can be quite difficult to make miniatures. Anywho, it's been great interacting with a community who are just as excited about miniatures as I am. While there is still a lot to improve in all aspects of TheMicrobakery, I can't wait to see what the future holds. :)<br />
<br />
Don't you worry, of course I was going to include an obligatory hand photo; I know you guys like it.<br />

<br />
For those of you that live in the United States, Happy Independence Day! I hope everybody has a wonderful weekend celebration filled with fun, laughter, food, and of course fireworks. I've put together a few July 4th treats for you, enjoy :)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/themicrobakery/19400007165" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="July 4th Miniatures by The Micro Bakery, on Flickr"><img alt="July 4th Miniatures" height="426" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/509/19400007165_760543f254_b.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here's a little sneak peak behind the scenes. To make the sprinkles on the ice cream sandwiches I mixed (separately) a pinch of red, white, and blue with a lot of translucent clay. Then I baked the clay hard; once it cooled I used a sharp razor blade and chopped away at it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
To make the sprinkles stick, brush on a light layer of translucent liquid sculpey around the ice cream and then dip the sandwich in the sprinkles. Just give it a try and don't be afraid to try other techniques :D </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This week, I'm sharing how to make tiny raspberry (or strawberry) jam linzer cookies. This is one of my mom's favorite cookies and is seriously irresistible. At the bottom of this post, I've included a video tutorial for you to follow along. I was planning on making an entire baking scene, but that didn't pan out since I was kind of pressed for time :( Maybe next time I'll be able to do one.</div>

Tip: While Fimo gel is quite thin yet very translucent and great for sauces, it's not the ideal consistency for a thicker jam. So I usually end up adding in a bit of translucent clay to create a better not-as-runny consistency.</div>

<br />
This week's miniature is hot cross buns! It was requested in the comments of my <a href="https://youtu.be/fvJvQg3RSw8" target="_blank">cake stand tutorial</a> and thought it would be fun to make. In all honesty, I've never actually eaten a hot cross bun, I'm only familiar with the nursery rhyme. :P But I know it's a very popular bread and it sure does look delicious!<br />

I have a fun post for you this week! One of my friend's favorite show is The Simpsons and it also happens to be their birthday. So why not make miniature themed Simpsons food for them?! </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/themicrobakery/18186845685" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;" title="Simpsons-Food2-(W) by The Micro Bakery, on Flickr"><img alt="Simpsons-Food2-(W)" height="424" src="https://c4.staticflickr.com/8/7745/18186845685_5a47015fb6_b.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br />
They requested the classic Homer donut and of course I had to make a dozen! I also added a six pack of Duff Beer because it's classic Simpsons. While not part of The Simpsons world, it still went along with the look, and made a hot dog on a donut bun since they love hot dogs.<br />

A tutorial for the cake stand I made last week was requested, so I thought I'd share it with you. Sorry that everything has been taking longer to post, it's hard to find a chunk of time to do everything, plus filming and editing Youtube videos definitely have a learning curve. <br />

This is a pretty simple scalloped border cake stand that can be easily made more elaborate. If you make it, I would love to see the results!<br />

<br />
As usual, I was browsing the interwebs for some inspiration when I stumbled upon <a href="http://www.gimmesomeoven.com/" target="_blank">GimmeSomeOven</a>'s beautiful carrot cake, so I made a miniature version! It's a bit hard to tell on these photos, but up close in person you can see little bits of orange clay in the cake that are supposed to be carrot shreds. Two of these will be listed on my <a href="http://themicrobakery.storenvy.com/" target="_blank">store</a> as soon as I am able to find an appropriate box to ship this in.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I made these simple cake stands from objects found around the house. The flat top of the cake stand is made of clay with a sheet of paper glued to it so the paint would glide on smoothly and without streaks. Then I cut out a scalloped edge and glued that to the side. The base of the stand is a golf tee cut to a scale appropriate length and glued with a big dollop of glue. Once everything was dry, I painted the whole thing with a few layers of thinned out acrylic paint. You can either use water or isopropyl alcohol to thin out your paint.</div>

<br />
One of my favorite categories of food is breakfast. After drooling and browsing some Instagram accounts, I knew the next thing I had to make were crepes, pancakes, and waffles. The hardest part was decorating the crepes. I used Premo for them in hopes that they would come out a little stronger than if I used Sculpey III, but no such luck. After baking they were so thin and brittle so I had to be careful when placing the toppings so they didn't crack. Unfortunately the fruit and cream crepe did crack... oh well. :/<br />

I am really excited to, finally, be opening an online store :D It will be hosted on Storenvy and will only accept PayPal. The store will be linked in the navigation bar.<br />
<br />
Feel free to visit my online store here: <a href="http://themicrobakery.storenvy.com/" target="_blank">The Microbakery's Store</a><br />
<br />
Before purchasing I suggest reading my <a href="http://themicrobakery.storenvy.com/store-policies" target="_blank">Store Policies</a> about payment, returns, and shipping information. If anything is unclear or you have further questions, please feel free to contact me via e-mail: TheMicrobakery@gmail.com<br />

<br />
Before I sign off, I do have to inform everyone about the amount of stock in the store. You will probably notice I don't have a ton of stock in my store, nor will it be constantly replenished. Since making miniatures is a hobby of mine, I don't tend to make a ton of duplicates; therefore most items sold will be limited release. Hope you guys understand :D<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After a few disastrous attempts at a <a href="https://instagram.com/p/zgCfYXkMbF/?taken-by=themicrobakery">funfetti cake</a> and <a href="https://instagram.com/p/z_Gk79EMS0/?taken-by=themicrobakery">burnt candles</a> (documented on my <a href="https://instagram.com/themicrobakery/">Instagram</a> account) I was finally able to create a few decent cakes. They're probably the most fun food item to make because they are so darn pretty looking! I wanted to do a few more with sprinkles and possibly funfetti, but I got too lazy and only made these :P </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I actually made duplicates of the blue vanilla and mint chocolate chip cakes along with a few extra slices and will be selling them soon. Watch out for my next post which will go into more detail about opening an online store.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Ugh, those candles were a pain! However, I think the end result looks nice :) I twisted white and translucent Premo together for a classic spiraled candle and pre-baked them before placing them in the raw clay cake. I highly suggest using Premo for the candles since they will be baked twice. Unlike Sculpey III, Premo becomes flexible when baked for longer periods of time instead of becoming brittle.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
To help prevent any further burning when baking the entire cake, I placed an aluminum foil tent around the pieces. Once finished, I made burnt candles wicks by glueing super thin pieces of clay to the top of the candles and painted it with black acrylic. </div>

<br />
If you know me, then you'll know I'm a huge fan of Jewish delicatessens. It's unfortunate there's no good one around here. Perhaps it's a blessing in disguise because I'd probably gain lots of weight. But really, who am I kidding, I'M DESPERATE FOR A GOOD JEWISH DELI AROUND HERE! If only Katz's was next door...<br />
<br />
The craving reached an all-time high this past holiday season; so much so that I ended up making pastrami. It took two weeks to brine and marinate (let's not even talk about all the time it took to find specific spices!) and a whole lot of painful waiting. While it didn't quite have the melt-in-your-mouth deliciousness that Katz's has, it still was pretty tasty.<br />
<br />
Ok ok, I bet you're tired of hearing (reading?) me blab so I'll get on with the pictures. I made hamantaschen, pickles, and pastrami on rye with a touch of deli mustard. I first created the hamantaschen cookie by creating a shell and then filled it with a mix of fimo deko gel, chalk pastel, and small chunks of clay.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/125784087@N03/16565729141" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Hamantaschen-WIP-(W) by The Micro Bakery, on Flickr"><img alt="Hamantaschen-WIP-(W)" height="640" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7281/16565729141_74fd46edd0_o.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/125784087@N03/16379931040" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Hamantaschen-(W) by The Micro Bakery, on Flickr"><img alt="Hamantaschen-(W)" height="640" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7452/16379931040_ff63b08bee_o.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Next up was the pastrami on rye! For the pastrami's pepper crust, I coated fimo deko gel over a chunk of meat colored clay and then rolled it in black sand. Then I sliced and textured the meat. Similarly I did the same for the rye bread. I made an oval shape of dough colored bread, shaded and textured the outside, sliced it, and then created the bread texture on the inside. You can't quite see from the photos, but I was playing around using different techniques to texture the bread because I don't like how I usually texture it. Still haven't found a texture I like... </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/125784087@N03/15947362193" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Pastrami-on-rye-WIP2-(W) by The Micro Bakery, on Flickr"><img alt="Pastrami-on-rye-WIP2-(W)" height="484" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8654/15947362193_1b77059c1d_o.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
To texture the pastrami, I used a sharp needle tool (a sewing needle or safety pin would also work well) and made a crosshatch pattern. Then dragged the needle in random directions to make it look better haha I'm not sure what the technical term is, all I know is it makes the meat look more realistic!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

You can't serve pastrami on rye without pickles! I made two different colored pickles; this photo only shows one. Ugh, it was such a pain to mix the colors to get a realistic looking green! The center of the pickles are the peel color mixed with a whole lot of translucent clay.</div>

At first I was only going to make one, but quickly decided if I was going to put in the effort I might as well make an assembly line and make a few more. The process of making these pans were quite simple; I used what I already had lying around at home.<br />
<br />
I used an oval template to trace and cut the bottom oval part of the pan on card stock. Then played around with the height of the pan walls until it looked proportional. You could also use a manila folder, thin cardboard, or any sort of paper that is thicker than standard letter paper. <br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/125784087@N03/16310694206" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;" title="Roasting-Pan-WIP1-(W) by Micro Bakery, on Flickr"><img alt="miniature roasting pan" height="425" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7550/16310694206_766e45b744_o.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
There were two sizes of wire and I decided to go with the smaller gauge, plus, it was much easier to bend. I pinched the ends of the handles so that it had a flattened surface to attach better to the card stock. It would have been perfect if I had a gauge in between the thick and thin one, but...oh well?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/125784087@N03/15716718373" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Roasting-Pan-WIP2-(W) by Micro Bakery, on Flickr"><img alt="miniature roasting pan" height="426" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7498/15716718373_bd0d28f20f_o.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/125784087@N03/16150749707" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Roasting-Pan-WIP3-(W) by Micro Bakery, on Flickr"><img alt="miniature roasting pan" height="426" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7497/16150749707_5739478b0d_o.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I used FolkArt metallic acrylic paint and applied two thin layers on every surface to increase opacity. Just note if using card stock, let the paint dry well between layers. If you paint the paper too soon, the paper begins to warp because it is too saturated with liquid.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/125784087@N03/16150442349" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Roasting-Pan-WIP4-(W) by Micro Bakery, on Flickr"><img alt="miniature roasting pan" height="426" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7481/16150442349_100748c679_o.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Tada! Here are the finished roasting pans :) I'm sure there are a million other ways I could have made the pans, but I was itching to try making them using card stock paper. Maybe next time I'll try sculpting them with polymer clay. </div>

Sorry for my lack of posting on all forms of social media and this blog. For the past week and a half I have been sick and suffering from a stiff neck, which makes it hard for me to hunch over and miniaturize. Anyway, if you make any cooking pans feel free to share them and let me know how the process went! Or if you have other ideas about how to make cooking pans then please share, I would love to read them.</div>The Microbakeryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04482893122562123882noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6890844103372164998.post-67296623465384139092015-01-14T10:41:00.000-08:002015-01-23T22:57:29.233-08:00Yogurtland Inspired Frozen Yogurt<br />
One of my friends' favorite food is frozen yogurt; during the summer (let's be real, maybe all-year round haha) we usually make a few trips to Yogurtland. I thought it would be fun to make some miniature frozen yogurt desk accessories that are not in any particular scale.<br />
<br />
I printed both Yogurtland and The Microbakery labeled cups but have yet to make any frozen yogurts with my username on it. :P<br />

I hope everybody had a great holiday season and a wonderful start to 2015. :) I made these peanut butter & jelly sandwich earrings back in December as a Christmas gift for some friends. For some strange reason, after showing my family these earrings, they all started craving them! haha Whenever I think of pb&j sandwiches, my head immediately thinks of the show PB&J Otter. Does anyone remember that? Butter was so cute!<br />

The jelly took a little bit of trial and error to get the color and consistency I wanted. It's a little red and a lot of translucent clay, red and purple chalk pastels, and Fimo Deko Gel. When unbaked the jelly looked cloudy and much darker than intended but I baked a test sample and it came out semi-translucent like jelly! Sweet.<br />

<br />
The start of a new year is just around the corner, can you believe it'll be 2015?! It's crazy to think I started The Microbakery in June of this year; it all still feels so brand new and exciting. As cliche as this sounds, this year really has flown by. <br />
<br />
To reflect, here's a few of the miniatures I worked on in 2014 placed in an awesomely cute display case one of my friends bought me for Christmas. Get ready to see lots of it in upcoming posts because it's too stinkin' cute!<br />

I can't even begin to express my gratitude towards everyone who's followed me and helped The Microbakery grow. Everybody has been incredibly kind, encouraging, awesome, and supportive. With deep gratitude and many thanks, I thank you!<br />
<br />
Here's to the start of a great New Year and more miniatures! Cheers!<br />

Who's excited?! Christmas is only a couple more days away ❄☃ Although to be honest, I'm a bit sad it's arriving so quickly because I love all the holiday lights, decorations, and spirit of the holiday season.<br />
<br />
This was an extremely fun little project to work on and I actually ended up making two other duplicates. Two to give away as presents, and one for me to keep. :P I hope you all have a great holiday celebration and a happy new year!<br />

Well, it's that time of year again! Let the holiday festivities officially commence with Thanksgiving being the first event of the season. Thanksgiving will be here in a few short days and once we come out of our food coma's, it's time to string up the holiday lights and place holiday wreaths on the doors. Um, to be perfectly honest though, I'm one of those guilty people who "accidentally" left their Christmas lights up since last year. What?! Fairy lights are really pretty at night, no matter what season. So...uh...woops...<br />
<br />
While it may be a bit premature to be thinking about Christmas, it's never too early to start working on Christmas themed miniatures. You always have to start a couple weeks/months ahead to prep for all the extra miniatures you'll be making. This year I decided to make a bunch of holiday themed cookie earrings for my friends and family as their gifts. It's not the price of the gift that matters, it's the thought. I put a lot of love and care into making these, I really hope they like them.<br />

I first sketched the shape of each cookie (approximately 1 cm tall) on a large flat piece of clay and then individually cut and textured each one. Then took a first pass applying light brown pastel for an all over "baked" effect and followed up with darker brown pastel around the cookie edges.<br />

The cookies with frosting on them were created by mixing polymer clay with TLS. Lastly I applied tiny clay decorations to them and baked it.<br />

About a week ago I ordered surgical steel earring posts and backings off of eBay. Finally after much anticipation I received the package and superglued the cookies to the flat pad earring posts. I couldn't be happier with the outcome! Hopefully my friends and family like them.<br />
<br />
P.S. I'm thinking about possibly making another tutorial. If so, what would you want to see?<br />
